It operates nearly 2,500 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states, under such local banners as Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Fry's, Dillons, QFC and City Market. The firm also operates about 778 convenience stores, 392 fine jewelry stores, 723 supermarket fuel centers and 41 food processing plants. Despite diversification moves, Kroger food stores still account for about 85 percent of sales. Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and Safeway (NYSE: SWY) are major competitors.

The firm pleased investors last week, when it reported fiscal Q1 EPS of 58 cents and revenues of $23.11 billion. Analysts had been expecting 55 cents and $22.32 billion. The EPS figure was a company record. Management also offered in-line guidance for FY09 earnings and said that about $643.6 million remained under the $1 billion stock repurchase program announced in January.

KR shares popped on the news and then began defining a bullish "flag" consolidation pattern. Stocks often leave flags moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the issue with three "strong buys", five "buys", two "holds" and one "underperform". The KR P/E ratio (15.86), Price to Sales ratio (0.26), Price to Book ratio (3.76), Price to Cash Flow ratio (7.15), EPS Growth rate (23.28%) and Return on Equity (24.04%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutional investors hold about 83% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 500 Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $23.39 and $30.00. A stop-loss of $24.90 looks good here.

Kroger was forced to take this action following reports that there had been E. coli illnesses linked to beef sold in Kroger stores in the two locations.

So far, it looks as though there have been 19 reported cases in Michigan, and another 15 cases reported in the state of Ohio that can be linked back to the Kroger beef. The meat in question has been traced back to a Kroger store in Gahanna, a town in central Ohio. It does not look as though any stores in Michigan have definitely been linked to the tainted meat, but since there are reported cases of the disease in the area, you should definitely return any beef that you purchased from Kroger during the time frame in question.

Of the 24 people who had been infected with the E. coli virus through Tuesday, 14 had to be hospitalized, while 1 reached the point of developing kidney failure.

Health officials warned that the best ways to avoid getting E. coli would be to make sure you cook your meat fully to 160 degrees and make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before and after each time you handle your meat.

Kroger is offering a full refund for any returned beef that was purchased between the May 21 and June 8 dates in the areas, stating that it is working with authorities to try to pin down the exact suppliers of the contaminated meats.

Michael Fowlkes has worked as a stock trader for seven years and spent the last four years working as an analyst for the online investment advisory service Investor's Observer.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Kroger, Darden Restaurants rise on profit increases

Filed under: Earnings reports, Kroger Co (KR), Darden Restaurants (DRI)

On Tuesday, both Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), the nation's largest traditional grocer, and casual dining chain operator Darden Restaurants Inc. (NYSE: DRI) reported better-than-expected profit increases.

Meanwhile, oil climbed on supply concerns following further Nigeria unrest and new Iran sanctions and steadied above $137 a barrel. UPS (NYSE: UPS) also gave a profit warning.

U.S. stocks ended almost flat Monday as the market digested some deal activity but remained concerned over oil prices with many investors staying on the sidelines ahead of the Fed meeting. Both the Dow industrials and the S&P 500 ended nearly the same as Friday with the Nasdaq Composite dropping 20 points, or 0.85%.

Economic releases today include June consumer confidence to be reported at 10:00 a.m. EDT. Consumer confidence probably fell this month to the lowest level in more than 15 years, meaning many will try to economize on their spending. The Case-Shiller report on April home prices also is on tap.

Mostly, though, investors will be concerned with the Fed's decision and statement Wednesday. While most on Wall Street believe the Fed will hold rates unchanged this time, many think the Fed will discuss a shift -- to some extent -- to focus more on inflation than the slowdown as well as hint at future rate hikes. The Fed's balancing act between trying to stimulate the economy while keeping inflation under check is becoming a more difficult task by the day.

Incorporate news, shipping company UPS (NYSE: UPS) lowered its earnings expectations for the second quarter due to slowing U.S. economic growth and high fuel costs.
Three types of raw tomatoes -- red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes -- grown in 17 states are voluntarily being pulled of the shelves and menus of McDonald's (NYSE: MCD), Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), Burger King (NYSE: BKC), Kroger (NYSE: KR), Outback Steakhouse, Winn-Dixie (NYSE: WINN) and Taco Bell, among others. In fact, "McDonald's has stopped serving sliced tomatoes on its sandwiches as a precaution, but will continue serving grape tomatoes in its salads because no problems have been linked to that variety."

Similarly, Burger King, <data industry="5700" symbol="YUM" type="stock">Yum Brands Inc</data>. (NYSE: YUM) restaurants, Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI), and <data industry="5700" symbol="CMG" type="stock">Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc</data>. (NYSE: CMG) have also removed the contaminated brands from their menus across the U.S., and some, like Burger King, in Canada, Puerto Rico and some other Caribbean islands as well. Many left the non-contaminated brands on the menu.

Getting salmonella is not fun. It's a bacteria that lives in the intestinal tracts of humans and most infected people suffer fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps starting 12 to 72 hours after infection and lasting for 4-7 days. The FDA hasn't found the source of the contamination, although it usually means contact with animal feces.

Tomatoes are probably the healthiest thing in many fast food sandwiches and on many menu items, but I guess not when they are contaminated. It's just too bad that this happened in the midst of the "good tomatoes" season. After eating tomatoes that taste and feel like plastic all winter long, it's a treat to have those summery sweet tomatoes. I guess we'll just have to stick to the non-contaminated brands and cooked tomatoes dishes like tomato-based pasta sauces.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Analyst upgrades: FISV, ARB and APC

Filed under: Analyst reports, Analyst upgrades and downgrades, Wal-Mart (WMT), Kroger Co (KR), Anadarko Petroleum (APC)
MOST NOTEWORTHY: Fiserv, Arbitron and Anadarko Petroleum were today's noteworthy upgrades:
These include coin counters, kiddie rides, bulk vending machines, skill-crane games and point-of-sale terminals. The firm also provides self-service DVD movie rental/purchase kiosks and provides money transfer services, prepaid wireless products, stored value cards, payroll cards and prepaid debit cards. Coinstar products and services are distributed through more than 53,000 retail stores. Corporate clients include Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), Kroger (NYSE: KR) and Walgreen (NYSE: WAG).

The company surprised the Street last week, when it reported Q1 EPS of 18 cents and revenues of $190.5 million. Analysts had been expecting four cents and $182.7 million. Management also guided Q2 EPS to 8-15 cents (12 cent consensus), Q2 revenues to $200-$210 million ($202.19M consensus), FY08 EPS to 60-75 cents (57 cent consensus) and FY08 revenues to $850-$900 million ($829.83M consensus). DA Davidson subsequently upgraded the stock to "buy".

The CSTR share price popped on the news and then settled into a bullish "flag" consolidation pattern. Prices frequently exit flags moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Altogether, brokers recommend the issue with five "strong buys", three "buys", four "holds" and one "underperform". Analysts expect an 18% average annual growth rate, through the next five years. The CSTR Price to Sales ratio (1.85), Price to Book ratio (3.32), Sales Growth rate (43.99%) and EPS Growth rate (100.00%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutional investors hold about 95% of the outstanding shares. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has traded between $24.69 and $38.00. A stop-loss of $31.45 looks good here.

Also, analysts are pessimistic about earnings for the first half of the year. At least one analyst expects a big earnings miss from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG). Target's (NYSE: TGT) moves into consumer credit may come back to hurt its first-quarter results. But some analysts are bullish about Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) ahead of earings next week. Georges Yared wonders if Wal-Mart's (NYSE: WMT) earnings make it a good buy for the long term. Though overall sales rose 2%, results were dragged down by a large inventory charge.

Kroger posted earnings of $322.9 million, or 48 cents per share, for the quarter that ended February 2, compared with a profit of $384.8 million, or 54 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue in the quarter rose to $17.23 billion from $16.86 billion a year ago. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had expected earnings of 47 cents per share on revenue of $16.81 billion.

Kroger blamed the higher-than-expected inventory charge of five cents per share on inflation, and also said that the previous year's quarterly earnings were boosted by a tax benefit.

For the quarter, same-store sales, or sales at supermarkets open more than a year, increased 8.2% with fuel sales at its stations and 5.3% without fuel sales.

Profits for the full-year were $1.18 billion, or $1.69 per share, up from $1.11 billion, or $1.54 per share, in the previous year. Revenue increased 6.2% percent to $70.2 billion from $66.1 billion, but sales rose 8.2% when adjusted for an extra week in 2006. Same-store sales rose 6.9% with fuel and 5.3% without it.

Kroger forecast earnings of $1.83 to $1.90 per share for this fiscal year, below the analysts' forecast of $1.91. The company expects same-store sales growth of 3% to 5%, excluding fuel sales.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Before the bell: WLP, AET, NOK, KR, AMZN, C ...

Filed under: Before the bell, Earnings reports, Wal-Mart (WMT), Amazon.com (AMZN), Motorola (MOT), Nokia Corp. Here's a quick peek at them ahead of results.

Blackstone went public in 2007 and has yet to beat earnings estimates. When the company reported third-quarter results back in November, earnings came to 21 cents per share, well below the consensus forecast of analysts polled by Thomson Financial of 30 cents, as well as the previous quarter's earnings of 46 cents (its first report after the IPO). For the current quarter, analysts expect only 19 cents per share, and $1.47 for the year.

The analysts' consensus recommendation is to buy Blackstone, with 3 of 8 analysts rating it a strong buy. Shares have fallen since the IPO to a low of $14.16 last week, but closed Friday at $14.58.

For news about Blackstone that could influence the earnings results, see BloggingStocks' Blackstone coverage.

Kroger has beat earnings expectations in the past five quarters. When it reported third-quarter results back in December, its 37 cents per share earnings beat the consensus forecast of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial by two cents, and was up from 30 cents in the same period of the previous year. For the current quarter, analysts expect 47 cents per share, compared to 51 cents in the year-ago quarter. Analysts expect $1.70 for the full year, up from $1.52 in 2007.

Kroger's earnings per share growth forecast for the next three to five years is 5.9%, which is better than that of competitor Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY), but not as good as the industry average of $15.5%.
Investors were pleased last week, when SunTrust offered a positive assessment of the firm's prospects and then the company issued a positive quarterly summary. Management reported Q4 EPS of 27 cents and revenues of $70.3 million. Analysts had been expecting 22 cents and $68.9 million. The company also guided Q1 EPS to 15-16 cents (16 cent consensus), Q1 revenues to $60-$70 million ($63.61M consensus), FY08 EPS to 84-86 cents (76 cent consensus) and FY08 revenues to $305-$308 million ($282.45M consensus). Wedbush Morgan subsequently reiterated its "buy" rating on the shares.

The stock popped through major moving average resistance on the news and then settled into a bullish "pennant" consolidation pattern. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Altogether, brokers recommend the issue with two "strong buys" and three "buys". Analysts see a 21% average annual growth rate, through the next five years. The RADS Price to Sales ratio (2.03) and EPS Growth rate (58.82%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutional investors hold about 80% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 600 SmallCap Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $11.00 and $18.33. A stop-loss of $13.90 looks good here.
